To Our Family of Stakeholders,

In 1997, our company was founded on the principle that first businesses have an inherent responsibility to people and planet. Twenty-five years on, we remain committed to that belief and its practice, extending our skills and talents in service a more just and equitable world for all.

We are proud of our team and our impact over the past year, from sharing our space and resources with an organization that provides respite, resources and support to parents and guardians of children with special needs or life threatening medical conditions to volunteering our time as educators and mentors to students from underrepresented groups aspiring to careers in technology and social impact.

We stood up for reproductive rights and shared our resources and practices freely for broad adoption; we contributed grassroots grant programs to fund community-based education and sustainability initiatives; and we donated our time and talents to our network of fellow B Corps and the larger for-purpose business community by advancing social impact frameworks and practices worldwide.

Writer and educator Margaret Wheatley said “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” After more than a quarter-century and countless lives touched through a simple commitment to put people and planet first, we are living evidence of that ripple effect.

Impact on Community

When One Door Closed, Another Opened

Metis has been a long-time sponsor of David’s Refuge, an organization that provides respite, resources and support to parents and guardians of children with special needs or life-threatening medical conditions. As part of our mission as a public benefit corporation and Disability Owned Business Enterprise (DOBE), Metis donated our unused office space to David’s Refuge during the Covid pandemic from 2020-2022. By donating the use of our idle offices, David’s Refuge was able to retain those funds to provide exceptional supports to families in need and continue their programs without interruption at a time when financial resources were scarce all-around. Metis also sponsored monthly volunteer lunches and donated to David’s Refuge’s annual “Taste of David’s Refuge” fundraiser. In 2022, Metis donated more than 19% of its net income to David’s Refuge in the form of cash and in-kind donations.

Goals

25 Years of Impact: We've Only Just Begun

In the past year, we increased our workforce by 35% while reducing our physical footprint by half. And though we offset our operating emissions, we lease our building and are thus somewhat limited in what we are able to do to further reduce our emissions. In the next year, we will research ways to lower our emissions to the greatest extent possible through improved technical efficiencies, reduced energy usage, and offsetting programs that use science-based targets to vet for efficacy. In order to strengthen our commitment to the environment, we will use our business as a force for good by lobbying the New York State government to pass legislation and provisions that will improve environmental sustainability for all.

We also hope to expand our service offerings to include more direct social impact-oriented services to both traditional and for-purpose clients, and to incentivize employee opportunities and compensation to for-purpose outcomes.

Lastly, we expect to renew our B Corp recertification in 2023, and we are committed to improving our B Impact score as a result of our continuous improvement commitments.
